How do photographers and filmmakers draw attention to social problem?

i need to write atleast half pafe for answer..see if u can bring any point to me!! Many times it is through documentaries. They can do this with many aspects like homeless people, polygamists, cults, gangs, and violent people plus prisons too.
These documentaries go inside and interview and tell the lives of these people in these situations.

They can also use social problems to make films like "Crash" and "Forrest Gump". They take a situation like retardation, skin color, gangs and turn it into movies that entertain.
